The term Nitrox is derived from the combination of the words Nitrogen and Oxygen. It is a breathing gas cocktail of enriched air allowing divers to reduce the risks associated with Diving Compression Sickness (DCS). In addition it allows divers to dive for longer periods with shorter surface interval breaks, resulting in the diver feeling less fatigued at the end of the day. Prior to the dive industry taking a special interest in Nitrox, tanks were typically filled with 79% nitrogen and 21% oxygen mixture. Put simply, Nitrox mixtures have an increased oxygen component which are more friendly to the body. Common 'mixtures' include 'EAN 36' - 36% oxygen and 64% nitrogen and EAN32 - 32% oxygen and 68% nitrogen. It is possible however to purchase other mixtures ranging from 21% to 40% oxygen.
Using Nitrox involves purpose built cylinders, special training, new dive tables and changes to your existing dive equipment. Please consult ' Travel Wizard ' to determine the resorts and live-aboards presently offering Nitrox.
